Wycliffe Bible, large
|
Thomas of Woodstock’s Bible, one of the most elaborate and large Wycliffe Bibles, used to be on the British Library website. At the bottom of the page were three images from the Bible, which you could enlarge by clicking on them. The page at the bottom right is the beginning of Acts of the Apostles, which Wycliffe calls “The Apostles Deeds.” (See “ye apostles dedes” in red at the top of the page when you enlarge it.) The first line of text has a word at the beginning and then “you the,” the rest of the word is on the second line, “ophilus.” This text reads “you Theophilus, first I made a sermon or Word of all the things that Jesus began for to do and teach til unto the day in the which he commanded to the apostles by the holy ghost.”
NOTE: In October, 2023, the British Library’s website experienced one of the worst cyber attacks in British history. In November, 2024 – more than a year later – the British Library said, "We're continuing to experience a major technology outage as a result of a cyber-attack. Our buildings are open as usual, however, the outage is still affecting our website, online systems and services, as well as some onsite services. This is a temporary website, with limited content.” As of the summer of 2025, the page with the Wycliffe Bible made for Thomas of Woodstock is still not available. Although not as elaborate, a large Wycliffe Bible created in the early 1400s and now at the John Ryalnds Library at the University of Manchester can be seen here. |
